Introduction

Meet the xA Ultra — the only Adapter you’ll ever need.

Developed entirely in-house and fully made in Europe, the xA Ultra Wi-Fi adapter supports all BMW E, F, and G Series models (2003–present).

It features an LED status indicator for installation progress and an exclusive energy-saving mode, so it can stay plugged into the OBD port forever without draining your battery.

Prerequisites

Set up your Phone or Tablet

Make sure the device battery is ≥ 25% charged.
Disable any power save features (Android phones)
Disable any VPN clients
Disable Apple CarPlay/Android Auto (can be achieved by disabling Bluetooth on your phone)

Some devices may automatically disconnect from the OBD adapter Wi-Fi when a known Wi-Fi network with an internet connection is nearby. If this happens, please temporarily disable auto-join for those Wi-Fi connections.

Set up your Vehicle

These are general preparation tips to ensure the installation of xProtect runs smoothly.

Basic Setup

Have your Ignition turned ON, engine OFF, gearbox in P. Keep doors closed during an install (or window open to operate from outside). Plug the Seatbelt In to keep the Ignition awake. Switch OFF lights, HVAC, radio, aftermarket screens, etc.

Battery & Power

Have a healthy battery. xProtect blocks installs below 11.9 V. It is NOT possible to install xProtect while the engine is running.

Disable/remove aftermarket Devices

If present, remove/turn off CAN-bus add-ons like: Throttle Pedal Commanders Port Injection or Flex Fuel Controllers Any Performance Displays (such as Awron) Sport exhausts with CAN-Bus operated exhaust flaps Aftermarket Android head-units or CarPlay units RGB Angel-Eyes or other aftermarket Headlights Aftermarket HUDs (head-up displays) CAN-blocking Anti-Theft security systems, like the "Ghost Immobiliser" Other devices communicating on CAN-Bus (like mileage manipulation devices) Poor connection quality is often caused by aftermarket devices that do not adhere to UDS vehicle communication standards. If you are experiencing such issues, please disable them. In rare cases, they may need to be disconnected.

Before you begin

(One-time setup before your first install)

1. Update the xProtect App

Make sure you’re using the latest version of the xProtect App.

2. Plug in the Adapter

When you plug in the xA Ultra for the first time, no LED will light up — that’s normal.
A firmware update is required before first use.

3. Update the Adapter Firmware

xProtect will recognise the xA Ultra adapter automatically and download the latest firmware.

Open your device’s Wi-Fi settings and connect to the network named xAU_FACTORY_XXXXXX created by the Adapter. In the xHP App, either: Tap “CONNECT NEW CAR” to start the guided update automatically, or tap the “xA Ultra” button (top-left corner) to open the firmware page and do the update manually. Wait until the update finishes. Reconnect to the new Wi-Fi name: xA_Ultra_XXXXXX.

4. LED Indicator Colours after Update

Your Adapter is now ready for use with xProtect, xHP, xDelete, MHD, Bootmod3 and all other software which requires an ENET adapter

Installing with xA Ultra

ANDROID IOS & MAC OS (M1+) WINDOWS 11

First-time voucher redemption & unlock requires brief Internet access:

Plug in Adapter→ Wait until the Adapter lights up blue
Join adapter Wi-Fi xA_Ultra_XXXX → in xProtect tap “CONNECT NEW CAR”
Make sure you are connected to the internet → Redeem voucher & download data.
Rejoin adapter Wi-Fi → Enable Flight Mode → You are ready to install xProtect.

Flash times:
First install ≈ ~ 3-5 min
Later changes ≈ ~30 seconds

Important Hints

Don’t switch between xProtect and other apps or lock your phone while flashing.
Disable any 'Power Save' features on Android phones, as they may affect the quality of the Wi-Fi signal.
Make sure your car’s battery is in good condition. If not, use a > 40A power supply; xProtect will block any install operation if vehicle voltage is below 11.9V
Warning lights during installation are normal and will be cleared once the process is complete.

xA Ultra Technical Information for Developers

The xA Ultra supports E, F and G-Series protocols (KWP and UDS) and features automatic CAN and ENET detection. When the adapter detects ENET, it lights up blue; if ENET is not present, it falls back to CAN mode and lights up orange. In ENET mode, both ENET and CAN are available simultaneously and can be accessed via separate ports. ENET mode 🔵 Blue: IP: Transparent/DHCP ControlPort: 6811 DiagnosticPort: 6801 CAN Mode 🟠 Orange: IP: 192.168.4.1 Port: 23 An HTTP configuration page is available at http://192.168.4.1:58424/config where the following items can be modified: Change the SSID Set a Wi-Fi password LED behaviour (Standard, Minimal or Off) Power mode (always on, ignition or CAN active, ignition only). OTA firmware upgrades are only possible through xAutomotive apps. The first time you use it, you must upgrade the factory firmware using one of our apps.
