xProtect - Installing with 3rd Party Adapters

Quick Summary

xProtect supports a range of third-party adapters for users who already own one or use other tuning tools.
While officially supported, these adapters are maintained by their manufacturers, so their behaviour may vary slightly between firmware versions.
For new users, we recommend the xA Ultra as the fastest and most stable solution.

Prerequisites

Set up your Phone or Tablet

  • Make sure the device battery is ≥ 25% charged.

  • Disable any power save features (Android phones)

  • Disable any VPN clients

  • Disable Apple CarPlay/Android Auto (can be achieved by disabling Bluetooth on your phone)

Some devices may automatically disconnect from the OBD adapter Wi-Fi when a known Wi-Fi network with an internet connection is nearby. If this happens, please temporarily disable auto-join for those Wi-Fi connections.

Set up your Vehicle

These are general preparation tips to ensure the installation of xProtect runs smoothly.

Basic Setup

Have your Ignition turned ON, engine OFF, gearbox in P. Keep doors closed during installation (or window open to operate from outside). Plug the Seatbelt In to keep the Ignition awake. Switch OFF lights, HVAC, radio, aftermarket screens, etc.

Battery & Power

Have a healthy battery. xProtect blocks installation below 11.9 V. It is NOT possible to install xProtect while the engine is running.

Disable/remove aftermarket Devices

If present, remove/turn off CAN-bus add-ons like: Throttle Pedal Commanders Port Injection or Flex Fuel Controllers Any Performance Displays (such as Awron) Sport exhausts with CAN-Bus operated exhaust flaps Aftermarket Android head-units or CarPlay units RGB Angel-Eyes or other aftermarket Headlights Aftermarket HUDs (head-up displays) CAN-blocking Anti-Theft security systems, like the "Ghost Immobiliser" Other devices communicating on CAN-Bus (like mileage manipulation devices) Poor connection quality is often caused by aftermarket devices that do not adhere to UDS vehicle communication standards. If you are experiencing such issues, please disable them. In rare cases, they may need to be disconnected entirely.

iOS: Settings → Wi-Fi → (adapter) → Configure IP: Manual IP 192.168.4.100 Mask 255.255.255.0 Router (empty) Settings → xProtect → Local Network: ON.

Notes on DCAN Wi-Fi adapters

Average installation time: First install ≈ ~ 3-5 min Later changes ≈ ~30 seconds Ensure that only one device (phone/tablet/laptop) is connected to the Wi-Fi adapter at a time.

BM3 Wi-Fi adapter - E/F/G & Supra

ANDROID IOS & MAC OS (M1+)

Supports ENET and DCAN. Connect to Wi-Fi: BM3-NET, password bootmod3.

First-time voucher redemption & unlock requires brief Internet access:

  • Plug in adapter → Ignition ON → complete phone & vehicle preparation.

  • Join adapter Wi-Fi → in xProtect tap "CONNECT NEW CAR" (reads data).

  • Leave adapter Wi-Fi → Go Online → Redeem Voucher & Download Data.

  • Rejoin the adapter Wi-Fi → Enable Flight Mode → Install xProtect on your car.

BM3 Wi-Fi Adapter

Connect to iOS & macOS (Apple Silicon only)

Should there be connection issues under iOS: Check: Settings → xProtect → Local Network: is turned ON.

Notes on the BM3 Wi-Fi adapter

Average installation time: First install ≈ ~ 3-5 min Later changes ≈ ~30 seconds Ensure that only one device (phone/tablet/laptop) is connected to the Wi-Fi adapter at a time. BM3 Wi-Fi adapters don’t support K-Line cars! (Z4 E86, X5 E53 and X3 E83).

Issues? → Firmware update!

  • Open Bootmod3 app → "Wi-Fi Adapter" → menu (bottom right) → "Update".

  • Update to the latest firmware for full xProtect compatibility.

MHD UNI Wi-Fi adapter - E/F/G & Supra

ANDROID IOS & MAC OS (M1+)

Supports ENET and DCAN. Connect to Wi-Fi:

  • E-SERIES: MHD CAN xxxx

  • F-SERIES: MHD ENET xxxx

  • G-SERIES: MHD CAN xxxx

  • Join adapter Wi-Fi → in xProtect tap "CONNECT NEW CAR" (reads data).

Issues? → Firmware update!

  • Install the MHD Flasher App and log in.

  • In the main menu, tap "Get Support Files."

  • Without closing the app, connect to the adapter’s Wi-Fi.

  • Tap "Codes" → "Read DME fault codes."

  • Wait 30 seconds, then unplug and reconnect.

Important Hints

  • Don’t switch between xProtect and other apps or lock your phone while flashing.

  • Disable any 'Power Save' features on Android phones, as they may affect the quality of the Wi-Fi signal.

  • Make sure your car’s battery is in a healthy state. If not, use a > 40A power supply; xProtect will block any install operation if vehicle voltage is below 11.9V

  • Warning lights during installation are normal and will be cleared once the process is complete.
